It's strange that it won't work. You need to exit the game and restart for it to take effect. The mode is shown in the top left on the main menu if I remember correctly.

What do you seen happen when you try and switch to 2D? The game actually defaults to 2D if it runs into problems, so it is odd that you can't force it there.

If you can't get it working I will try and take a look at the options file layout Monday when I get into the office.

Is it possible that your options file is write protected? I don't have a version to hand, but I imagine it would be in the install directory and called OPTIONS.TXT or INI.

Are you maybe running Vista in a restricted mode?

Are you running as a non-administrator in XP?

Looking, it seems to be OPTIONS.BIN, which means it's not editable easily. You could try deleting the file and see if that helps. It's really very odd.

One thing you could try - and it is making use of the fact that the game actually tries to default to the 2D mode if something goes wrong - would be to try the following:

1 : start game and select 2D mode
2 : alt+tab out of game and write-protect the OPTIONS.BIN file
3 : go back into the game and exit

That should prevent it from saving out the file at all, which (should) mean it is stuck in 2D mode. Not quite sure if it will work though!
