I am probably going to do a Syrian States army, with Arab cities allies. In history, which Syrian State allied with which Arab city and when?

The way to think of it is the Syrian City States are the larger, richer and more respected leaders. Aleppo and Damascus are probably the two "big" ones. You had a tradition of them being in charge.

The arab rules cities that are listed, tended to be end points for caravans and more what today would be Lebanon oriented. These were wealthy, but didn't have the manpower or leaders to dominate their neigbhors.

It is available in 3 paperback volumes, and will give you all the information you want on such alliances.

Actually, there is a more modern version by Christopher Tyerman, building on Runciman's work called "God's War".

It doesn't provide much detail about the battles, but provides superb information about the alliances and politics of the era.

It is only one volume too (but over a thousand pages, so takes some reading...)
