Just a bit of fun. You must choose three armies:

To 'snog' = The army that you would play in order to give you the best chance of winning.

To 'marry' = The army you love, that you would play time and again whether they win, lose or draw.

To 'avoid' = The army you least like to play, or will play to give you a tough challenge.

For myself:
Snog would be Early Bosporan, lots of cheap highly manueverably cavalry, lots of missle troops, some nice hard hitting lancers, lots of 2pt filler LF to swarm around the flanks and boost the break points.

Marry would be Late Ptolemaic (Roman). I love all things Egyptian and have studied this period in particular with Cleopatra, Marc Antony and Julius Caesar playing their parts in the tale. The troops themselves are quite handy and i like the mix of legions and pikes.

Avoid would be Illyrians. not that I have anything against the nation. But undrilled average MF plus a few javelinmen is not the most ispiring combination in the world as far as tactics go. And you need a bit of luck to win with them!

Snog: Bosporan (Though I hate the horse archer graphic, what I really want is Skythians - which would probably be a more correct graphic for them anyway) or Suren Indo-Parthian (Parthians with Skythian allies).

Marry: Early Pontic (Mithridates, he da man - even if he did not command the army in person at that stage).

Avoid: Anything based on mostly MF.

My answers vary according to points...

at 550 points or less: Bosporans, Late Macedonian, Attalid Pergamene
at 600 points: Late Macedonian, Late Macedonian, Attalid Pergamene
at 700+: Late Roman Republican, Late Macedonian, any of the numerous lists that can't muster 800 pts...

Snog: Seleucids -- easliy morphable into cav heavy or foot heavy
Marry: Seleucids -- a joy to pick an army from all the available toys.
Avoid: Illyrians -- what's the point?

Thinks *snog* must be a Brit thingie...tries to remember a Harry Potter film to recall what it meant...

Snog: Later Jewish (such a mush of stuff)(and very cheap rear support!! )
Marry: Romans of pretty well any flavour
Avoid: Anything with more than two BG that have four legs.

Recalls Howard Stern having a slightly different version.

Snog: Seleucids + Partian Allies: Flexibility and punch.

Marry: Seleucids : Since the early 70's and after reading Alfred Duggan's "Elephant and Castles", I have been fascinated by the Successor era.

Avoid: Illyrian: can't get my head around as to where their strengths are.

Who says they have to have any? We are slaves to history, not its masters.

Snog: Armenians, just love the cataphracts, horsearchers and loads of MF javelins.

Marry: Seleucids, they have it all, cataphracts, pikes, legions, scythed chariots, elephants and camels!

Avoid: None of them, as I am a true glutton for punishment!
