I prefer them as LH...preferably mit der javelins. Speedy. Nimble. Not prone to charge through everything to try and kill the first bit of enemy flesh spotted.
Others??

Unarmoured cavalry, bow, sword works pretty well. Evades from stuff that can hurt it but it's a real unit for charging other units when you want to and the shooting is a plus both for effect and for the free change of facing.

LH leaders don't provide rear support, just their leader bonus, so I only use them with other LH. Give me a drilled heavy cav unit anytime -- espically if it's my CnC.

I like to have HF leader if using a heavy foot army base ie Hellenistic or Romans... since they cant move that fast, it forces one to keep honest at having a leader support your main battle line....

Drilled heavy foot almost every time. If it was good enough for Philip II, it's good enough for me. Pretty boy Alexander might have been infatuated with his horsey but real men fight on foot.

And it encourages the men to know that the general does not have to option of fleeing on his white horsey.

It's not fleeing... It's tactical repositioning.

To be sure, a few foot leaders among the heavies is never a bad idea.

Depends on the army but usually at least 1 mounted the rest foot, heavy or mediums depending on whats available. I like to have at least 1 pike general put him in the middle and he controls the whole line.
Mounted generals are great for getting around fast, and if undrilled light horse would probably be a better option.

I've been enjoying the LH Jewish commanders...they zip from Disrupted unit to Disrupted unit...rallying away!!

Being LH, no temptation to charge in (although enemy LF can be tempting.
