Command Elements

Hey everyone;
Every since I first started playing historical minis (back in the WRG 7th ed. days) I've always liked having those "command elements" with each group of troops.
I was wondering how many of you keep that tradition going with FoG? I can see that it would be useful in separating various BGs in a Battle Line. Also, if you do use command elements, how do you model them. One of the other nice things I always enjoyed about them was the chance to add banners, flags etc. to each block of troops. Always gave a nice added visual IMO.

Thanks in advance for any contributions.

My Republican Romans have one command stand per legion, but I want to add them to each BG in the future.
Even my drilled Numidians will get a command base as do the upcoming Norman spearmen BGs.

I love command figures, so why not play with them?

I agree Mehrunes, they add a very nice visual to any army.

I think I have every BG in my Mid-Republicans as 4 bases. :twisted:

Each one has one figure (usually front right) who either has slightly better armour or snazzier helmet and a standard in hand as well (either red vexillum or one of those manipular hand thingies). (Although if not actual Roman, the hand on top gets cut off and it's just a basic standard, or animal on top.)

This way, each BG has a standard but the command figures are not over done (as in, a 4 base BG of 16 HF with 4 command figures on one base).

Me too. Every BG has a command base with it along with flags. My Army command bases have 3 figs for C-in-C and 2 figs for others.

I am basing all my generals on 40x40 stands (15mm scale), it makes them clearly distininct (well except for elephants and chariots) from other stands and allows some more room for mini-dioramas. I usually try to have one stand with more figures than others so it can be an IC or whatever.

Also, I have been experimenting using a single 28mm figure as a general and also find that to be a nice way to go (2 figures for an IC stand).

Here's a sample. Each of the three HF Spears BGs has a standard, but the figures mostly blend in with the rest. Just a fancier helmet or maybe fancier armour slightly (the dudes with the standards have bronze breastplate...rest have linen).

Hi Blathergut;
Yeah that's pretty much how I'm treating my command elements as well. I'm working on my NKE boys right now, I'll post some photos when I can.

Nice work btw!
