I bought matrix game version of FOG can i buy the Slitherine version of Rise of Rome

Yes, just make sure you navigate to the folder you installed FoG to when installing RoR as it needs to go in the same folder.

I also bought FoG on Matrix and RoR here and had no problem at all

IIRC even the RoR installer pointed to the correct Matrix games FoG folder!

dumb question whose updates do i use matrix or slitherine

Slitherine patches will work with anything. Matrix must be used with Matrix as they only have a subset of the serial numbers.
