I think you are installed as the game is running but crashing?

It sounds like you are running on Windows 7?

When you instlled you need to make sure you install the patch to the same folder as the original game. Windows 7 offers you the option to move things to the ProgramFilesx86 folder which is fine, but you need to do this for all installs. It looks like you did it for one but not the other?

so the rise to rome download (236 MB) is a patch? I thought it was a fresh install.

No, it patches FoG and unlocks all the new content. It defaults to the FoG folder so if you go with the defaults you should be fine (not sure if that is true of the Matrix version).
