Terrain Affects for combat

I've searched the GS manual for how terrain enhances a defender, but other than river combat I can't find any reference. Presumably there is some benefit in defending in some terrain?

I dont believe that any changes were made from the original game so page 14 of the original manual applies.

Hmmm, I only have the MH version, which doesn't go into any detail other than terrain has effects...........
