Flank charge question

We had this situation come up last night- A group of 4 LH charged the flank of a formed bow unit. The bow's 2 flank stands turned to face, and defeated the LH in melee. The light horse broke off.Do the 2 stands of the formed bow continue to face to the flank,or do they reform to the front during their next turn? Thanks

Pg 70: "...it can reform in either side's maneuver phase. It reforms into normal formation facing the direction previously faced by any of its bases (player's choice)...."

So it can either reform to its original front or reform on the two bases that turned to fight - and must do so before it can make any voluntary move except to feed bases into an existing melee.

So it could have reformed during the light horse manoeuvre phase to have all of its bases facing the light horse? And so got maximum dice in the melee phase?

Or is that how they beat them in this case?

At impact the bowman unit turns contacted elements to face the LH [(as per rules) copy this to the end of each of the following sentances].
Fight impact
Assuming the LH hang on in there they can expand 1 element width to form an overlap.
The bowmen (assuming they are not contacted elsewhere) can move one file to either counter an existing overlap or the one formed by the LH expansion.
You fight the melee
If the LH are beaten and retire, or just break off the bowmen at the start of the next manouver phase (which in this instance is likely to be your phase) may reform facing either their original direction or facing the LH. So bent units can only exist for limited periods of time and cannot move until they have reformed into a legal formation

Easy - just take it a step at a time.

That's the beauty of these rules :D

They lost both impact and melee phases, and they broke off during that joint action phase. The bow were not contacted to the front, and I forgot about feeding bases. The light horse broke off during the joint action phase of that turn.We had no idea about the reform for the bow,as we'd never actually had anyone survive a flank charge(we forgot the 1 step loss too,for the flank charge, too, btw. That may have made the difference. This is the problem when you only get to play one game a month.FOG has been out for almost 2 years, and I dont think I've gotten 2 dozen games in yet.

There isn't one for battle troops charged in the flank by skirmishers.

Best wishes,
