Direction of rout

In a game the other week we had a unit which was fighting to its front and flank. It routed but so did the unit which was in contact with it, to its flank.
The question is does it rout directly back away from the enemy unit persuing it or at a 45 degree angle away from both units in contact even though one will not be chasing it and indeed itself routing. P100 says you bisect the angle of troops 'in combat with it'. So it is a question if troops themselves routing are in combat.
The other player was the mighty Mr. Hamiltion whose opinion was 45 degrees.
I supose that a similar question would occur if only two units were fighting only each other and both rout, perhaps due to dead generals. If they are at an angle to the long table edge do they go away from each other or towards the long table egde.
