So what army are you favoring for Rise of Rome? I am leaning towards Pontic myself, but I am keeping an open mind.

I fancy trying out a parthian army. Never used one before.

I bought th ROR Army book the other day to get a feel for what might be avalaible. Parthians look like they could be formidable with the right mix of bows and lances. Not sure how they would do if they had to defend a location though. But then I think their idea is if you can't beat em, run away until you can, or they get tired of following you.

Yeah I've got a few of those books plus lots of others I've collected over 30 odd years of wargaming - sadly I've yet to find the perfect army!

I want to try the Jewish Army.
I do not think that some of the armies will do as well as there table top brothers though. In table top you have terrain types associated with each army. You do not have this with the PC Versian. This will affect some armies, like the Illyrians, a lot since their army was good for highly dense terrain; but if they end up fighting Parthians in an open plains map - Ouch!

We've yet to see how the random battle generator works - army have an associated terrain type in the books - maybe the Jewish army means more hills will be on the map.

Not latter day Macedonians?
I'm tempted to say Galatians (as it's hard to go wrong just charging everything in sight and trusting to the inherent ferocity/superiority/stupidity of your troops).

The Galatians (aka 'the Crush-all-yall Barbarians') sound like a good starter army.
