Kataphraktoi/Klibanaphori/Trapezetoi ?

Hi
In DAF the Nik Byzantine army lists Kataphraktoi units.
On P. 72 is a picture of some figures labelled as 'Kataphraktoi', while P.73 has an Osprey illustration of an identically equipped warrior entitled 'Klibanaphori'. P.74 meanwhile has a pic of some figures on half-armoured 'Byzantine cavalry'.
I already have both fully armoured lancers and half-armoured lancers and archers, so if I am aiming for a post-1042 army, which figures should I use for the HA Cav units listed in the book ?
TIA
Pete

IIRC Kataphractoi and Clibanophoroi were the same thing. Fully armoured horses and blokes for the cataphract lancer troop type. For the horse archers in the same unit you could get away with a lot less armour. But the rear rank base should be mostly lancers anyway. See this thread.
(I'll find it in a sec)

So, two bases, the front one with the fully armoured Lancers, the back one with two half-armoured lancers and a half-armoured archer ?

I use fully armoured for all the lancer/mace figures an unarmoured horse for the archer. Its speculative, but the bloke firing the bow couldn't be very well armoured. Check out the link for a lot of different thoughts on how to represent them. And a nice piccie at the bottom.

Useful thread, thanks.
How does the FOG world recat to a 40x60 single base unit ?
Because I ahve the figures they would be, 1 Full-Arm Lancer, 2 FA Lancer 2 Half-Arm Lancer + 1 Half-Arm Archer.

Most people would not have a problem with it. If one base dies the other goes anyway. The only problem is turning 90. They should become 2 wide and 1 deep. Being on a single base they couldn't be. (This would not be a problem for a 4 base unit as front rank remains front rank on a turn). Perhaps they should just wheel to where they want to get to if they wish to stay in fighting formation. Or the Doctor could amend the rules just for them.
Also, even though they are very pretty, they tend to die ingloriously whenever I use them. The death roles are awfully butt clenching times.

Being hit in rear or flank would be a "problem" too. But I suspect most people would be happy to remember they are fighting in 2 directions and work out POAs as such even though the figures cannot be moved to show it explicitly.

"Klibanophoroi" are a delusionary troop type - ignore

They'd be useful for a deluded general.

I also use my Nikephorian Kataphraktoi in old DBM DBEs as they look much better. Since the only way to use them successfully is to sandwhich them between two units of other cavalry so that they are less likely to be overlapped and thus suffer evaporation from a failed death roll, turning them to face the flank is usually not an issue. And even when protected on each flank mine usually lose the frontal combat, fail the death roll and evaporate anyway. However, I always keep 2 spare cavalry bases in my box to bring out if the situation ever arises.[/quote]

This looks like a fun troop type. I've decided to finish the Nike Byz project that I started for DBM so I can use the 2-base Kats. I think mine are fully armoured with lances for one base and partly armoured with a mix of bow and mace for the other base. (The Nike look like a bit of fun with the multi-armed cavalry, Normans and the Varangians too).
I've seen BGs of 2 powerful bases used to good effect on a few occasions.

So, in summary,
1. both half armoured and fully armoured horses count as Kataphraktoi
2. No-one minds if they are mixed in a unit
3. No one really minds if they are on one 40 x 60 base
Correct ?

There will always be someone, but feel free to tell them to get a life.

You're posting on here Richard. What sort of life is that?
