Restricted Zone issues

Last night - played a Game - i had an auxilia unit about 2.5 MUs from the
front of some armenian cataphracts.
I wanted to advance and go the flank of them which in theory i could as
i could shift 1 inch to either side as i moved forward on the advance
My opponent argued that as i moved forward i would have entered the restricted
zone and not been able to do this but i thought as i was outside the 2 MU
area i could
So i won and i did but i still lost the game
Was i right or wrong or just a bit gamey

Hi,
You cannot shift wihtin 6Mu of an opponent, unless to avoid friend or difficult terrain up to a 1/2 base.
So IMO your wrong.

Also, if you were that close to the Restricted Zone, I don't see how you could "go to the flank" since you would not have been eligible for a flank contact.
But I may not understand your description in the OP.

No shifting as stated within 6mu of enemy units.

Should have taken the brave stand and just stood up front and taken what was coming to you anyway. One thing to remember is if your troops are spears and you charge into the cats they get the + and you don't for charging shock cav. Sometimes its just better to stand and take it.
Of course if you didn't have spears the above would not have mattered anyway but you still pretty much would have had to stand out front and take it.

If the Auxilia were drilled, rather than this, turn 90 and run away

I thought of that too, but that brings up the question of is my rear now in range of the Cats, guess not as the cats are over 2 MU out and can only move 4 themselves, guess they could turn and run after you and try to put you in their restricted zone, with luck anyway.
Of course if you fail the CMT standing and taking it seems like the only other choice.
