Basing Troops with Heavy/Medium optionsev

I'm just finishing up painting some Gauls. I'm going to be using them in my Roman army, and they might also see duty in a Selucid or even Carthaginian army. The Roman and Carthaginian lists allow you to field these as all Heavy or all Medium foot. I'm guessing this is equivalent to DBA/M's Warband(O) and Warband(F). I know how to base them if I want to use them as heavies (15mm deep bases, 4 figures per base) or if I want to use them as mediums (20mm deep bases, 3 figures per base). What if I want to keep my options open? Would it be better to base them as heavies and call them mediums when I want to use them that way? Since medium troops can have 4 figures per base this is how I'm leaning. I just wanted to get some other opinions.

Thanks for your help,
AJ

You could just base them 15mm depth and tell your opponent if you are fielding them as mediums. There are only a few situation sin FoG where the difference in depth is actually important in game terms rather than purely viusal terms. And if such a situation arises you can trat them as if they are 20mm depth. Even leave a bit of space between the ranks if you like.

A better solution, at the cost of a bit more effort, would be to have some 20mm sabot bases that fit around the 15mm depth bases when you want to field them as mediums. As many players do with their DBx-based generals elements when using them as FoG generals.

Base them on 15mm deep bases that are magnetized. Mount a 5mm strip on the back of a metal base that you can put them on as a sabot.

Two suggestions of sabots. Sounds like that's the way to go. Thanks for the help.
