so, everything is where its supposed to be
GS has been installed using the Slitherine installer etc...
I beleieve all the relevant fonts are installed
but still, all I get is xxx and yyy instead of text - very difficult to play when you can't read the messages (not mention annoying when the map is covered in xxx and yyy's!)
any idea's?

Which language version are you playing. Can you make a screenshot of the map with just XXX and YYY? Do you get these letters instead of real text EVERYWHERE or just on the map? The reason I ask is that the map uses Haettenschweiler font and e. g. the hex info panel uses Franklin Gothic Medium.
Can you see the text normally in the vanilla game?
Also notice that there are different versions of Haettenschweiler available. Some support special characters and some don't. This one supports ALL language versions (including Cyrillic letters):
ftp://ftp.carrier.kiev.ua/pub/windows/fonts/unicode/
Get the Hatten.zip file and unzip it so you can install the font.
You can send screenshots to my email address:

Hi
when the game is loading does the main screen have the phrase "Grand Strategy" ?
Do you see CEAW 1.12 GS Ver 1.02 ?
Have u started a hotseat game (any scenario) and just click through to advance the game turns and see if some text us readable? It almost seems your are not accessing the proper file for the messages and city names.
There are separate files from the vanilla game so if the game is accessing the wrong file you will get garbage.
There are almost twice as many cities and messages as compared to the vanilla game.
This is definetly strange.
Just some ideas.
Well I tried to reproduce so my ideas do not point to those items. At least I tried. I will keep trying to find a solution.

Borger discovered and confirmed that if the entry
DEBUG_MESSAGES 0 in the
settings.txt file is set to
DEBUG_MESSAGES 1 then you will get exactly what you're seeing. This file generated on the first time that CEaW - GS is started and is located in
*\My Documents\CEAW Grand Strategy
What's odd is that
DEBUG_MESSAGES 0 is the default and the only way to change this is to manually edit the value.
