No, you do not need expansion packs. They give you more armies, battles and ways to play but are not required for anything.

My feelings are similar. I only bought the game a few days ago, expecting to get a complete package. Well, maybe it is reasonable to add extra armies and scenarios as an expansion pack, but a lot of what is included in the expansion are parts of the standard tabletop game and I would have expected them to be included in the computer game, without having to pay for an expansion pack. Things like :
o A new Line of Sight option. Games can be played with or without LOS. Hide battlegroups in terrain, behind hills or other troops. Beware of ambushes!
o Baggage camps which appear in battle and can be looted for bonus points. Some armies are allowed to fortify their baggage.

Field of GLory is a great game without the upcomming expansion and well worth the money? An expansion does not change that does it, since there is no content taken out of the original game, nor has the price gone up. In my humble opinion, Slitherine is doing a great job. They are even making it possible to play against people who own the expansion even if you don't. That means that you won't need to buy anything in order to keep playing the game online.

Also, when Field of Glory was announced, I'm quite sure they stated that expansions would be released in the future.

No but all of the things I mention above are things I would have expected to be in the original game. I didn't expect to have to buy an expansion for them. I would expect most players of the tabletop game would also expect these things to be included, and would be surprised at having to pay extra for them.

You are not forced to buy anything you don't want :)

Anyway in general features will be free patches. It is the army packs that you will be buying. We need to keep all version in synch feature wise whether you have army packs or not so players can continue to play games versues others without the army pack.

We've made initial prices lower and pre-order prices lower to make sure the hardcore fans who are early adopters get the best prices. Most of the time the hardcore are hit with high prices and then prcies drop. The community is important to us and we'll do everything we can to support you.

Other than giving it all away for free there is not much more we coudl do. Obviously we need to generate revenue to keep producing games so buy it if you want, don't if you don't!

However I'm sure people will find something to whinge about :)

Still not clear what the original game includes. If you don't buy any army packs, can you only play the scenarios provided with the initial game or also play armies included in the original game scenarios in matches online or user scenarios? Since the expansion pack includes some of these armies, it appears as though you can't and that at least one army pack would be required to do anything other than the initial scenarios.

With the basic game you'll be able to play the 20 or so scenarios out there but each patch comes with 3 or so more scenarios. You'll be able to play any user scenarios. You wont be able to play scenarios that are part of the expansion pack.

You'll need at least one army pack to use the new online play mode and army builder. Once you have one army pack you'll be able to play against anyone with any army pack. You'll be able to play against & see troops from army packs you dont have but not to use them.

Think of each expansion pack as you buying the army book and all the figures in all the lists, already painted and based and ready to use!

I've asked this on the FOG Digital forum but I'll repeat it here : Does that mean that all of the features in the expansion, except for new armies and scenarios, will be available as a patch to people who have only bought the basic game ?

And the reply is the same :) In general yes, but there may be specific features related to army packs. E.g. the army builder does not really do anything if you have no armies to load up and edit.

I don't mind buying the TT version books and such - I feel you get a lot of eye candy and bathroom reading with them, beyond simply list expansions. But, if the FOG online runs the same economic model, I am not so interested. I have been playing it since it came out and enjoy it very much, but the bang for the buck on expansions is not the same. I can't even use the online expansion to swat flys, whereas the books make good weapons.

o New random battle generator using armies created in the army builder for single and multiplayer.

This is perhaps the most interesting part as it gives a large number of battle possibilities.......and means you don't know before hand what the battlefield will look like and forces some real thought into the army building part of the game which I have always enjoyed on the TT version. I wonder if the player will have any ability to effect the type of battlefield by having more mounted or better commanders ala the TT game.....

Mac version - we hope to announce some news soon

Backup CD's are available for order. Just click on the add BackUp CD in the shopping cart.

If you dont think the army packs add value don't buy them :) Economically they cost more to produce than the books as we have to buy, paint and render all the figures for all the armies in the book but that's not your problem!
