FRAG - simple move to retire away

Gentlemen,
on page 114 (Effect of Cohesion levels), the rules state that a FRAG BG can "make a simple move to retire away from all enemy within 12 MUs but must pass a CMT for any other move". Concerning the "simple move" part of that sentence, does this mean, for example, that any BG including a non-skirmishing BG can turn 180 degrees with simple advance before or after if doing so "retires" the BG away from all enemies. In other words, "retiring away" by a FRAG unit (whether drilled, undrilled, skirmisher, non-skirmisher) is always a simple move and the retiring BG can include a 180/90 degree turns etc if such a turn permits the unit to retire away from all enemy and it is still a simple move?
Thank you.
Chris

Being fragmented doesn't make things easier. The only move you can make without a CMT is one that would ordinarily be a simple move and that is away from all enemy.
Skirmishers can turn 180 and retire as that is ordinarily a simple move. Non skirmishers cannot as that would ordinarily be an impossible move.

I see, Hammy, so the language "can make a simple move" does not create an exception to all the other move restrictions under the simple and complex move chart. I was reading "can make a simple move" as allowing a FRAG BG to get the hell out of the sticky situation easier. Thanks for your help.

Correct. Can make a simple move means just that
not "Any move that ends up further away from the enemy regardless of it it would otherwise be possible is considered a simple move"

This one comes up every so often. Should it go in the "common misconceptions" thread?
The existing wording is perfectly clear, but wargmers do have a tendency to understand any wording to mean they can do what they want to do, rather than what it actually says.
With hindsight, it might have been better to word it:
"...must pass a CMT to make a simple move except to retire from all enemy within 12 MUs."

But that means I don't have to pass a CMT to retire away if I read it quickly, no matter what move I do.
"Must pass a CMT to make any move, except a 'Simple' move away from all enemy within 12MU"
But its all playing with words and hoping people read it with the same intent the writer had.

I read it as providing for a special retirement move at first blush, but if taken that way then the implementation raises questions.
