Why does my elephant BG, when charged by a Roman HF Impact Foot, and in combat takes 0 hits and gives the Roman 34 hits, take and fail a cohesion test?

Perhaps if you had givent them peanuts before the battle their strength would have been up and they would not have been so exhausted by that fight with the Romans....

I think what the game is displaying is not hits but rather casualties(ie the # of men , beasties actually killed) A unit can actually take "hits", and lose cohesion but not necasarily suffer men dead.

Or its a bug since the Romans are the ones who should have tested. I have had the odd situation where a battelgroup goes from steady to rout in one combat, they should not drop more than 2 cohesion levels in one turn so steady to fragged should be as bad as it gets.

Hmm, I have never seen a unit lose more than one cohesion level from a single attack( unless hit from the rear). From you post you seam to indicate that a unit should not lose more than 2 levels in an entire game turn, regardless of how many units gang up on it? I dont see that in the manual but maybe this is something from the TT rules (I dont own them)
Happened to me

It has happened to me, charged from the front and I went down two levels - even had it happen to me when I charged another unit.

I have percents on now instead of casualties....so will see...but, still seems odd that it won the combat (seemingly) but took a cohesion test and failed

Even though you suffered 0 casualties your percentage of casualties was higher. Could of been anywhere short of 5% while 34 romans from 1500/1000 is somewhere around 2%. It is possible to drop from steady to routed in a single hit but this is due to you reaching your auto rout level from cumulative losses. A 100% unit can theoretically only lose a max. of 2 levels e.g. steady down to fragmented. Usually only occurs with poor quality troops with a low chance of passing a cohesion test.

2 step loss of cohesion should only occur from a single combat although my observations have been that you can only ever drop 1 level per turn from shooting. I have had steady units rout for some unexplained reason from a melee combat.
This 2 step cohesion drop is not restricted to poor troops it can happen to any troops that happen to roll poorly for a cohesion test, so more likely to happen if the game does not like you.

Was it poor units auto-routing because of casualty leveles, perhaps?

1. I prefer playing with the percetage loss display. You get a better idea of casualties.
2. Elephants do not need to take any losses to run away. Dead elephants don't run anywhere. They just need to be very annoyed/scared etc.
