NKE - Why no heavy weapon troops?

From my limited reading on NKE I wondered why there isn't troops with heavy weapons in the list. Even the biblical army list book includes a drawing of a NKE soldier using a two handed axe like weapon.

Because they were mixed in with the other close combat troops, not in separate units with a majority of men with two-handed weapons.

A fair cop

,
still disappointing as I am painting up a couple of units axemen for my Old kingdom army and wanted to reuse them.

This is similar to the 'Viking Berserker' issue.
From studying the Viking period away from the narrow confines of a wargames table, I have long since abandoned the Victorian interpretation of whole units of Berserkers wandering around the battlefield. (Long before FOG came out.)
The figures I already have now serve as supernumeries on commander bases or are mixed in with my Freemen. (I think 1 or 2 even ended up in my Irish MF Hw).

Is there clear evidence that this changed between the Old/Middle Kingdom and the New Kingdom? The earlier list does allow HW armed units but not the NKE list. (I'm not aware of any clear difference that the native infantry was organized differently for New Kingdom and have done a fair amount of reading on the period.) It seems that NKE armies made increasing use of non-native Egyptian mercenaries such as Libyans and Sea People but I do not recall reading anything specifically about the native infantry being organized differently between the Middle and New Kingdom.

I would certainly think you could use them as Close Fighter units in your NKE army without anyone complaining. In this case the HW weapon would just be assumed to represent the sword capability of the units in the list with it being assumed that the light spears have already been thrown

No, but we were being lenient to the Old/Middle Kingdom, considering how raw a deal they get from the points system.
i.e. If anything is wrong it is the separate HW troops in the OK/MK list, not lack of them in the NK list.

I am painting up the Old/Middle kingdom for fun, never expect to win anything with it. FOG really dumps on this army with the close fighters swordsmen not getting Lt spear (which is free). Seems something is wrong with the pts when you compare to some armies that get MF Jav/Lt Spear swordsmen for the same price as Egpytian sword only guys.
