Question from New Orleans Holiday Tourney.
XX
XX
XX YYYY
XX
XX
XX
XX is a BG in Coulmn facing up the page YYYY is an enemy BG Facing down the page after pursuing an enemy (XX's friendly) that has been destroyed.
The gap between XX and YYYY is less than 1 inch.
Can YYYY declare a charge on the column of XX?
Is it a Flank Charge? (and all that that brings with it?
Does the fact that YYYY starts thier move from behind the front edge of XX negate the rule about wheeling within 1 inch to create a flank charge?
Thank You

You veritably have opened Pandora's box. May your sanity survive the responses you get.

We are all resonable, rational, adults, that can read the rules and understand simple english. Are we not?

Yes

No

No. This (BGs side to side after a pursuit) is precisely the type of situation in which it was intended to prevent a flank charge - because it would happen too easily. It is the sole purpose of the rule. [That is why there is no equivalent rule for rear charges]

I agree with RBS. The rules are aboslutely clear on this point and always have been.

The BG's were not in side edge contact there was a gap of about 3/4 of an MU.
Does this make any difference?
Thank You

As 3/4 of an MU is less than 1 MU then no, it doesn't make any difference at all.

yes if you were in side edge to side edge contact you couldnt charge them ( you are already in contact and can only swing into them in the manouver phase to initiate a "non flank" contact in mellee.

IMO you could still charge. There is nothing in the rules prohibiting this. The only restriction is on how you can enter combat in the manoeuvre phase.
