Supporting Battle Groups

In the rules section relating to Melee combat it explicitly states that 'Each adjacent supporting enemy battle group reduces a battle groups attacks by one'

Can we assume, therefore, that each friendly adjacent battle group increases the number of attacks by one and, if so, is this to a maximim of 6 hits - as indicated in section 8 ? This does seem to be the only way to get more than four attacks in a melee.

No, enemy units reduce both sides dice, so both end with less than 4 if both have enemy supports but is unlikely to happen. The only way to get more than 4 is with support fire when archers are charged.

Ahh. Sorry if I appear to be a bit thick but you've lost me here. Wouldn't charging come under Impact combat? Under Melee combat - section 8 - it definately shows up to 6 hits but I can't see how you get more than 4 in a melee. Mind you, do number of attacks equate to number of hits? :?
