I’ve never played DBR

But Santa’s promised me an army for FoGR
When it comes out, I plan on doing ECW/TYW in 15mm, and I want to hit the ground running, but I don’t know what I’m going to need. I’ve had a look around the internet but there doesn’t seem to be that much about, not like fanaticus or the madaxeman.
So about 14 battle groups?
3 battle groups of 4 bases of 3 cavalry on cavalry bases?
1 battle group of 6 bases of 3 mounted dragoons on cavalry bases plus 6 bases of dismounted dragoons on 20mm deep bases?
8 battle groups of 2 bases of pike and 4 bases of shot of 4 figures each on 15mm bases?
2 battle groups of 2 cannon on 40 x 40mm bases?
Will I need any skirmishers, light cavalry or light infantry or both?
Will I need any Halberdiers?
I’m not looking for any army list, but I want enough figures painted so that I can start playing straight away. I don’t mind if I need to add to it at a later date and I’m not bothered about painting to many figures over what I’ll need. I would just like a few pointers as to what I’m likely to need or a couple of links to some good DBR resources.
Any help appreciated.
Cheers
Steve

Join the party steve,

OG has some excellent Polish figures I am planning on purchasing for xmas/bday, but I need to know what to get first!

I need to know about basing... I want basic information if even nothing more that play-test lists. Seriously, as long as the authors let it be known that any play test list made available is open to radical change (but won't be if FoG is to be followed) then whats the harm.

Outside of a select few information is hard to come by...

In the US, DBR was never a "big deal". Not saying it wasn't played, but in all the time I've been in the midwest (home of those in the US DBR circuit) I've never known it to be played, nor tournaments run.

It has been said that there is enough left over lead from gamers elsewhere that the delay in playing will not be that large...

I can't disagree strongly enough with that opinion.

If you search DBR_List and DBRList among Yahoo Groups you should be able to find resources including information on troop basing in DBR.

Cheers

I'd recommend the Testudo figures for this period - by far the best you can get IMO but you pay a bit extra for that of course.

Dragoons will be based a la DBR on 40mmx40mm bases - no separate mounted and dismounted. Looks quite nice if you have some men shooting and another holding some horses. I suggest just go for 4 bases of these.

8 battle groups of 2 bases of pike and 4 bases of shot of 4 figures each on 15mm bases?
3 figs to a base would be acceptable as well - formations of the period were quite loose and many 15mm figures are quite chunky these days

2 battle groups of 2 cannon on 40 x 40mm bases?
You'll be able to get away with just 1 BG of these at least to start with.

Will I need any skirmishers, light cavalry or light infantry or both?
Not to start with - although some armies of the period will allow a few of these as options.

Will I need any Halberdiers?
Not as separate BGs - although they can do nicely as officers.

As mentioned before basing is DBR friendly.

I want basic information if even nothing more that play-test lists. Seriously, as long as the authors let it be known that any play test list made available is open to radical change (but won't be if FoG is to be followed) then whats the harm.

Radical change is the norm at the moment, the beta test lists would be a dangerous guide.

Luckily,I have played DBR,annd with the lists,at least have a vague idea as what to expect. I've been painting Italian wars stuff off and on in anticipation of this(and playing other games with it,as well). I think I'll leave my Louis and Williamite armies alone for know, till I have something more concrete.

Does that count for pikemen as well?

Yes, Nik's confirmation referred to both the pike and shot in the question.

3 figures for both or 4 figures for Pike and 3 for Shot (who were looser in formation) both look OK and are readily identifiable.

Just been looking at some old DBR figures after hearing FOGR coming this year.
Nice to know about basing. How about Pistoleers, can we expect them to be OK only 3 to a base?
How will Pi(F) be distinguished?
