Scythed Chariots

How does scythed chariots work? I made some for 'The Elephant Victory 273 BC' and they don't seem to do that well - most of the time the light chariots hit harder. 
According to the on line help in the game, the scythed chariots get 0 melee attacks (unlike the miniatures version) so that may be the problem. So I assume that if they don't break the opponent from impact (or with help from friends), they will by definition never win a round of combat after that.
