EAP Medium Infantry Basing?

I'm fairly new to FoG (and ancients in general) and looking to build my first 15mm FoG army - Early Achaemenid Persian.

My question is, since most of the foot (Immortals & Persian/Median etc. ) are classed as Medium Foot which may be based as either 3 or 4 figures per base, which is preferred?

I guess 3 per base is more usual for medium? However, since the front rank at least (in the case of 'Sparabara' troops) will have a large pavise-like shield to protect themselves and the archers behind, will this look odd at 3 figures per base?

Would I upset people in competitions if they see Medium foot based 4 per base, where they might expect 3 per base?

Just looking for guidance

A lot of people are holding to the old WRG convention of drilled troops 4 to a base, undrilled 3 to a base, but that is just a matter of habit I think.

People are going to know and understand what your troops are. You should probably just look at it in the context of modelling, painting and budget decisions.

I have some EAP sent me by a friend, which I think are by Irregular. The pavise is HUGE, and three to a base will look just about right.

Whenever I get around to these guys (that is find where I haveput them) My inclination is to crowd the bases. With the large pavises, I am leaning towards three in the front rank and four in the rear. Skulking, conscript hordes and all that.

I am also starting out with a (nearly finished) EAP army and kind of had the idea to use four in what were historically massive armies (like Xerxes' Persians or Mithridates' Pontics) as this would better represent the idea of a great mass of soldiers.

For smaller armies (such as those of the late medieval period) I would use three.
