Feeding bases and the restricted zone

Hello - I'm still trying to learn the rules and got a bit stuck with this problem last week...
Is feeding bases into melee affected by the restricted zone of a BG?
We had a situation like
BG A was fighting BG B. The rightmost elements of B were not involved in combat and were in the restricted zone of BG X. Can those elements be moved to join the combat?
Our judgement at the time was that the restricted zone affects "normal movement" and as we didn't think feeding bases was normal we allowed it. It did feel a bit cheesy as it let me get them out of the way of a potential charge.
Thanks
David

You can only feed the file of B that is not contributing as an overlap into the melee. This would still leave the file that is already fighting as an overlap (and hence not eligible to be fed into the melee) as a target for X to charge.

Interesting...
Well, the rules say that if you are within 2 MU of an enemy BG, you are pinned by it, but if you are pinned by more the one BG, you can decide which one the restricted zone restrictions apply to. If we assume that a BG you are engaged in combat with also pins your BG (that seems logical to me), then your BG would not be pinned by another group and would be free to move those stands into an overlap position.

I don't thin pinning applies when you are engaged in melee. Only restriction for feeding in bases is are the bases contributing to the fighting by being directly engaged or as an overlap. Basically if you are contributing dice to a melee you can't be fed in to that melee. There is no restricton in to an overlap postion as long as there is no enemy to their front. In the original question BG X could only join the melee by charging into the overlapping enemy.

Pinning only applies to BGs attempting to move, not to those already engaged in melee. Restrictions for feeding bases into melee are covered in the "feeding bases into melee" section.
