Italian campaign

Hello everyone, I've just bought the game yesterday and start my first campaign, Italy, in easy mode and historical accuracy.
First of all I've tried Diplomacy which I found quite useless: I only got a reply frome Sabine which have soon been defeated by Aequi. My first battle was against Aequi and I lost, I understood late I had a poor army to fight against them.
So I've tried to improve economy and move to attack only when I saw other armies moving away from other cities: this appeared to work good as I was able to conquer my first city, Anxur, defeating Volsci's cavalry there.
Still I'm wondering if there a way to know which troops work better against which other and how much does troops timing affect the result of battles.
Thanks in advace for any replies
