We are playing a tournament at home and I was wondering if there is a standard time limit for each players turn.

No not in the UK I think Spain might be limiting the time taken. TBH its not a problum imo.

Generally no, but you might like to have a quiet word with anyone who is being particularly slow. If you have a lot of new players you could make things easier by having less points/longer time for games.

We were thinking in this issue, but there is not a easy solution.

I think it´s a problem of some players not of the rules, Julian wants to make a penalty sistem for avoid the especulative players, but I´m not sure that this can run well.

I'm afraid that and any other unorthodox ideas suggested by myself or others have been knocked on the head. Most people seem to prefer to risk some crap games and then moan bitterly about it than try to put in a simple system to sort it out.

I used to play in a number of chess tournaments and they always used a clock. Someone who took way to long to think about their moves early in the game would find themselves in time trouble in the later stages. Using the clock also kept someone who was loosing from draging out the game to an unfinished draw.

I have found that when it it your opponents turn and they are not doing anything or are looking at an area of the table where there is nothing left to move that if you point out things like "you only have those two BGs still to move" or prompting "have you finished movement" does seem to chivy things along.

I am still convinced that a lot of former DBM players stare at the table expecting there to be a clever move somewhere even if they have already moved everything in that area.

I normally don't mind a player taking his time when making moves - as long as it is consistent and that mutual politeness is returned. What I have a problem with is when a player either:

-Has been moving at a relatively slow pace throughout the game, then realizes that the round is about to end and harps on me to accelerate my play so that they can get in the extra turn/phases which may enable them to win.

or the obvious opposite

-Has been moving at a relatively normal pace throughout the game, then realizes that the round is about to end and slows waaaaay down to avoid losing.

Of the two, the first one actually pisses me off (while the second just irritates), since my opponent takes on the air of being offended or blames me for not speeding up.

This situation does not happen often, but it does happen and I find the first happening more often.

I have had the honor of declaring a forfeit on a player who refused to finish the game because he knew he couldn't win.
I gave him the option to play til time expired or concede. He conceded. So maybe not a forfiet, but it did shut him up.
I hate complainers. Especially ones that are losing. Another thing that I've faced is a player who dithered so much he would forget that he had already moved a BG and try to move it again. And the all time hands down winner, the guy who moves his BG, then decides against it, moves it back to a better start point and tries to move it again
