Bushi Basing

So I am looking at re-basing my Samurai army for the Heian list that is built on the mixed BGs of MF Bw/HW.
The recommended 15mm basing is to use 40x30 bases with a mix of mounted and foot.
I'd prefer to use standard MF bases (i.e., 40x20), though I might still squeeze some mounted figures in there.
Question for event organizers: how strong is the basing recommendation? 40x20 bases are more flexible for maneuver, but will they be rejected as "illegal" because of the basing notes in the army book?

Spike (Mr. Monahan, if you're nasty):
As one of the event organizers in question, I can say that I will only get fussed if your opponents have trouble figuring out what is what on the table-top. The word used in the book is "recommend"; I suspect that the 40mm x 30mm base size is chosen to make is easier to mix a horsey in with the foot figures.
Make your basing pretty and no one will care.

...or you could take the post 1467 option and use normal MF bases.
The manoeuvre situation is interesting though because, althought the extra depth is a disadvantage in some circumstances, if you're 2 bases deep and turn 90 degrees, you will be 2 bases wide.

Which is great for undrilled troops who find it difficult to expand. Oooh I might go with 30mm bases now. Good call.,

I think that in basing Bushi it should be compulsary to include a shrubbery.....

A number of years ago (playing DBM at Grandson) I played against a French player, Phillipe I think, who was using an Early Pre-Islamic army.
Some of his troops were carrying surfboards and he had an Oasis as his camp with a group of surfers at it.
Very cool looking.
