Kushan - Now that I've got 'em, how do I paint 'em???

I recently got some of the very fine Kushan / Indo-Skythian minis by Khurasan miniatures.

They have photos of painted minis and a brief summary about them here:
http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/kushan.html

Looking at the minis I am confused though, as the cataphracts' headgear looks like fabric hats, and the high collars make me wonder if they are metal, leather, stiffened fabric or a combination.

The elephants perplex me as well.

Khurasan mentions a book by Gorelik published by Montfort.

Can someone give me a book title, or any direction for painting these guys?

Thanks!

The book is Mikhael Gorelik's "Warriors of Eurasia" it's very good, roughly 50% illustrations but covers a long time period. Look at the steppe history forum too as there's a thread on warrior illustrations...http://steppes.proboards.com/index.cgi? ... thread=824

Thank you for that link! Useful as to the subject at hand and for the group as well, as the steppes are the origin for 3/4 of the armies I love.

I can buy the metal reinforced collar, but the helmet still looks like a fabric cover to me rather than the metal 'cap' Gorelik illustrates. I wonder if the helmet is from an actual artifact example or from period art?

Plenty to work with here, and the illustrations really show the continuity from the Skythian grand pappy models.

The books are nigh impossible to find - I found one at USD $138. Our fiat currency may be shaky, but that is a stretch.

I believe the illustrations heavily rely on coins; see http://www.indusnumis.com/index.php?mai ... &cPath=2_9
