Kushan - Now that I've got 'em, how do I paint 'em???

I recently got some of the very fine Kushan / Indo-Skythian minis by Khurasan miniatures.
They have photos of painted minis and a brief summary about them here:
http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/kushan.html
Looking at the minis I am confused though, as the cataphracts' headgear looks like fabric hats, and the high collars make me wonder if they are metal, leather, stiffened fabric or a combination.
The elephants perplex me as well.
Khurasan mentions a book by Gorelik published by Montfort.
Can someone give me a book title, or any direction for painting these guys?
Thanks!
