Hi everyone
As the title suggests, who can use Catalan allies?
I have a Catalan army at the moment and really like the almughavars but sometimes I get really bad matchups. I would prefer to use a force with some decent heavy foot with the almughavars covering flanks or terrain.
I know SHNC and CoA can use almugahavrs in the army lists but they seem too few for my liking.
Cheers

Latin Greek as allies, and "Feudal Catalan and Early Crown of Aragon" and Later Sicilian in list.

Apparently the Late Byzantines who originally hired the Catalan Company don't get to have them as allies which seems rather odd. The Catalans can have Late Byzantine allies but not vice versa.

Latin Greeks are my current weapon of choice and the Catalans are a mandatory comlepent.
4 TCs
4 BGs 16 superior heavy armoured knights (4 of them drilled)
1 BG of 4 protected average drilled cavalry lancer swordsmen
2 BGs of 6 poor LF bow
1 BG of 6 poor LF javelin
Catalan allies
2 BGs of 4 protected drilled MF crossbow
2 BGs (8 and 6 bases) protected drilled MF offensive spear amulgvars
12 BGs
16 wide superior knights with generals to fight in the open.
drilled can and Xbow to escort them in
superior catalans to dominate terrain or support the knights.
Another similar army list is medieval crown of aragon

When employed by emperor Andronicus the Catalan Grand Company was indeed sent off to fight the Turks. They did take with them a Byzantine contingent led by the Emperor's brother Michael and some Alans. They didn't get on at all well and for the next couple of years the Company fought the Turks (mainly Karaman - Black or White Sheep, can't recall which: Neither can make an army of 15,000 foot and 5,000 cavalry as at the Iron gates!) by themselves, which they did very successfully.
Things went pear shaped when the Catalan leader (a Sicilian of German origins named Roger De Flor) was assassinated by the Alans, very probably in colusion with Michael Paleologos and possibly the Emperor.
So Byzantine and Alan allies can be used in 1305. Otherwise I think the Late Sicilians should have quite a few Almughavars and the Duchy of Athens (Latin Greek) employed them as allies before refusing to pay them and being annihilated at the Battle of Kephissos where the Catalans blocked the river to create an artificial marsh which the Latin knights charged right into. A tactic no serious wrgamer will repeat.
