Size of Army's - Army lists

Will the Army lists for the AOW be released all at the same time or will they come out gradually ? It is fine not having to rebase your army - but having to discard/purchase figures from the army may well be a block to change over
Coming from a Warhammer

background and looking to get into 15mm as an inexpensive (relativley speaking) alternative I can see the questions forming and having read the design philosophy there are a lot of how the mechanisms work and what makes it more exciting but not much on "is it easy to get into ?" or "how much do it cost ?" No-one likes to shell out more than they have too
I know that the main target is all the people that play DBM at the moment , but to give the hobby a "shot in the arm" you need to be able to attract wargamers from other periods into ancients as well

Hi
The release schedule is still being worked on, and involves a number of boring factors, but it is unlikely we will have all of the army lists available on day 1, However there will be a number of lists available from the start. We will also include a pair of compatible army lists in the rulebook so people can have a try. We have taken this decision, as we don??™t want to delay release till all of the army lists are available.
So far as rebasing is concerned we are very aware and conscious that having to rebase your existing armies would not be welcome, whichever rule set you have been using. So we will aim to avoid this.
The rules will cater for both 15mm and 25/28mm scales and I see no reason why 10mm would not work as well, just as long as you and your opponent use the same
We very much believe that all of us who are interested in this period and wargaming in general have a great deal in common whichever rule set you have been using and we hope to build on this. For example we will shortly be calling for Beta testers to take part in a closed Beta testing programme and we hope that this will attract players from all areas of the hobby.
The rules are already at a fairly advanced state so we will be calling for volunteers pretty soon.
The Beta testing programme will be managed similarly to our already established procedures for computer games.
Best Regards

Thanks guys - we will be looking for some beta testers, but we will only be able to manage a small team.

Well, OK, but please don't compromise the other aspects of the system too much in pursuit of this. I'm sure many people will use this as a (welcome) excuse to buy & paint new armies anyhow
Then again, I personally will be starting from scratch, so I'm biased.

Hi there
Can the authors give us a hint at the scope of game intended by AOW, is it intended for a 3.5 - 4hour game? Is it intended that you need a set of figs at the DBx 400-500AP level - for example.
Just curious

The idea is to have a similar number of troops as you would have used in DBM 400-500 point armies, and last a similar amount of time. We dont want to force people to paint up load of new troops to play and we don't want them to end up with half their figures gathering dust in a box.

You should note that the UK standards are not those in use overseas. It is rare to find competition DBx being run at over 400 AP outside of UK Doubles Games. Most competition games fall into the 350-400 AP range. At the suggested scales in DBx this gives armies varying form perhaps 30,000 - 10,000
Is there an intention to restrict the playable armies to those that could actually field a significant force in excess of say 10,000 ?
I would also draw your attention (if you are not already aware of it), to the TNE list for army lists. There has been a significant and well researched body of work on which to base lists.

the only thing I would look for is that all the army lists are fair
They have roughly the same points of compulsory troops
and have a list total of approximately the same too.
The current DBM lists are very poor in this respect with a great variable in compulsories and some army lists having three times the available points of others.
I appreciate that some "small" armies are going to have to be scaled up and a few may even need to be scaled down but we are trying for a balanced game not a total historical battle ( 500 knights of St John vs 1 1/2 million chinese springs to mind or 400 points each)

So far as Army sizes are concerned we are pretty well aware of how this is dealt with in other countries. We have played in just about every place on earth that wargames.
We will shortly be moving to a closed Beta Test and the individuals concerned will be invited and be drawn from a number of countries. In fact the Brits on the Beta test are badly outnumbered
