Flank March questions

Can anyone give me the answer to the following questions please ?

I want to flank march a mounted command that can dismount...

1) Do I test for arrival / stragglers as all mounted if I intend to deploy it dismounted ?

2) I assume I have the choice of whether to dismount or not when the march arrives and do not have to declare it earlier ?

Cheers

PS THe Tibetan list in E of D looks delightful !

1. They test as drilled cataphracts which is what they are.
2. They must be dismounted when first deployed, the other 2 bullets being irrelevant.
3. The compulsory optional or is it optional compulsory fortified camp ruins it.

Don't worry Phil it is almost certainly a mistake - I can't recall anything that would suggest it should be compulsory. Mind you don't hold your breath for errata at the moment.

Flank marchers never deploy on table, they move on, so the first bullet does not apply.

Bullet 2 occurs at a specific time in the deployment sequence. After that they become their foot versions, including for flank marching.

3rd bullet does not apply.

A BG must deploy on table - it cannot simply magic itself into existance.

However, there is a -1 on the arrival roll for Medium or Heavy Foot, so if they arrive dismounted would that have influence the preceeding roll? The Straggling test would also be slightly more difficult.

Don't know.

If you move on you measure from the table edge to find you position at the end of the movement phase. Whereas if you deploy you troops start in a deployment zone and move from there.

It is suprising how long it can take to get a flank march into action from the table edge. Just don't try it with heavy foot.

But that is still deployment. They are deployed by moving them on.

No. Deployment is done before the first game turn.

Deployment

verb 1 bring or move into position for military action. 2 bring into effective action

What is the difference again??

Deployment occurs in the deployment phase and flank marches arrive in the movement phase.

Flank marches arrive and are deployed in the movement phase

but do enemy flee from a flank march where all the units involved straggle and fail to arrive ...

Strangely yes, the general arrives and scares them away

Yes, because they arrive, move and THEN you take the straggling roll, after all the units have fled.

Well done Paul!

You've found something on which the rules are totally silent - and therfore no surprise to see a mix of views.

My advice would be to PM Simon and get his view?

FWIW I think that should be treated as how they're deployed. So if they come on dismounted they have a greater chance of straggling - but what do I know?

Problem with this approach is that it is more difficult to arrive if you are heavy foot...

Would you have to throw extra to decide? i.e. if I throw a 10 I can arrive as mounted, but if I throw an 11 I can arrive dismounted or still on my nag?

If you are going to mail the authors can you ask them to sort out orb as well please.

Sort out Orb, is it Christmas.

re the dismounting it says when they are first deployed, so it sounds like the travel on horse and deploy to foot.
