Miscellaneous musing on legion stuff

OK, this isn't about the game, per se, I know that Slitherine just used the actual historical names, but...

Principes, sounds like it would mean something to do with first, but they were in the second rank, as I understand it...

Hastati were swordsmen, clearly, but the hasta from which they drew their name was a medium spear...

The only explanation I could come up with is that we are speaking of the manipular legion, and perhaps the old names and forms were retained when the transition was made from the old hoplite system to the (then) new manipular legion?

Can anybody shed any light here?

Not really. The Hastati were teh youngest and usually less experienced, poorer/less equipped battle infantry. Princepes were still youngish, but well armoured and battle hardened. The Triari were older Veterans and some say more like the administrative part of the army, so not really battle troops.

When looked at like this the Princepes are really your Elite troops, so primary/princepes may be the reason they have this name. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will kill this theory soon enough ;)

I' m posting my plea for help here under misc. I've been doing pretty well at easy level until the Battle of Aque Sextai - First, only have hafl of my army, then, there is not enough time! I've mixed units and although I'm close, I can't seem to manage. Time is my biggest enemy. 100 minutes isn't very much. Any suggestions? I need to either have more horse, or more time I can't get to the skirmishers AND fight off everyone else quickly enough
It there a hint manual or something? The annoying thing is one can't move on either.....

I'm no greate strategist, but I need some help here This forum is about as close as it gets to a hint manual! What would be the optimum config for this scenario? Most grateful to any assistance.

More tips on which this battle it is, please...

Try rushing the correct parts, and sending a unit to head off everyone else.
