flank charge

had a situation arise in a recent game that I was wondering about. My opponent was in a colum, kind of at an off angle to the side of my unit so that the rear of the colum was strung out to my front. He wanted to flank charge me but I pointed out that over half his front rank base was still in my front facing so no flank charge that turn. I then questioned the position of the rest of the colum, he thought that a legal flank charge is based on the stand or stand that will actually make contact, not the rest of the colum that was strung out in front of me.

so the question is does the entire unit have to be behind your front line or just those bases that will make contact? I thought the entire unit had to be behind but was just wondering others thoughts on the subject. :?:

It is my understanding that only one base has to be fully behind the flank and it can be a rear rank base. There is nothing in the rules that say flank charges are judge on the front rank. The other most important thing is no part of your BG can be in front of the enemy BG you want to charge in the flank.

thanks, looks like it could have happened if my troops had not broken before he got it lined up.
