Looks like Pike & Shot Campaigns needs jigging up with some new Scenario designs and new
Wars to explore, so what about The Carlist Wars and in particular The First Carlist Wars
from 1833 to 1840 ( Spain's 19th century civil war )
It was the largest and most deadly civil war in nineteenth-century Europe, fought by
more men than the Spanish War of Independence ( known as the Napoleonic Peninsular Wars )
It might have been the largest counter-revolutionary movement in 19th-century Europe ?
It's certainly considered the last great European conflict of the pre-industrial age.
Background:
Conflict: Fought over the succession to the Spanish throne and the future of Spain's government.
The Carlists: Supporters of Carlos de Borbón (Carlos V), the late King Ferdinand VII’s brother.
They wanted to preserve traditional regional laws and return to an absolute monarchy &
a predominately male line of royal succession.
The Liberals ( Cristinos / Isabelinos): Supporters of the young Queen Isabella II and her mother/regent,
Maria Christina. They defended a centralized, constitutional monarchy.
Foreign Support: The Liberals received crucial financial, naval, and volunteer backing from the
UK, France, and Portugal including the British Auxiliary Legion, sent by Britain to support the
Liberals against the Carlists.
The attractions is uniform, tactics and firearms which were identical to those used during the Napoleonic
Wars.
There's been a growing, if not steady interest in The Carlist Wars and for tabletop wargamers, with
the Helion book " A Savage and Romantic War" A Wargamers Guide to the First Carlist War, Spain, 1833-1840
is a must & in the pipeline and about to be published by Caliver Books is "Just War : Two Spain's by
Jon Sutherland with loads more First Carlist Wars scenarios.
