Battles in MP

Hello
I only play in MP, and that’s where I think there’s a problem with how battles are resolved.
Basically, the only units worth producing are Knights, light archers, and possibly heavy infantry.
The rest of the units are hopeless and useless. Is there any way to change the battle resolution algorithms so that other units would also be useful?
Maybe light cavalry could scatter some light archers at the start? Maybe slingers or javelin throwers could make a difference? Maybe medium infantry would be useful in the mountains?
Generally, the AI always deploys Knights or, alternatively, heavy infantry right from the start, and after the first head-on clash, the battle is over.
Maybe introduce a few more battle phases? Maybe add a bit more variety to the terrain (forests, rivers, hills), where units could gain bonuses or suffer penalties? Maybe the maps could be less symmetrical?
In general, any changes that add variety to the game on a tactical level and make other units useful as well would be welcome.
