What have peopled used to model field fortifications, specifically for a Republican Roman-era army?

Field Fortifications of LRR will very likely be the sudes stakes. Baueda does them.

Kebab sticks, blue tac, pva glue and flock. Chop the sticks to about 10mm length. Put the blue tack on a 40mm base. sStick the kebab sticks next to each other in the blue tac to form a solid line. PVA glue over the base and blue tac, flock , paint the sticks.

My 15mm Roman camp uses a 15x15 mm balsa rod on the base for the rampart on a 40x 20 mm base. This works as a support for a row of half cocktail sticks as the stakes. Corner towers use a 40x40 mm base, around 30 mm deep supporting longer cocktail sticks. Gateways use the balsa block with a gap and a horizontal cocktail stick to support the shorter gate stakes.

This would probably work fine for 25mm using bigger blocks.

Transatlantic Translation: Toothpicks (US) are the same as Cocktail sticks (UK) - though obviously not the coloured platic ones with fancy mouldings on one end.

No the colored plastic ones with the little plastic stuff on the ends would MAKE a WHOLE different kind of camp!!!!
