Vae Victis - Romans vs. Etruscans: Ongoing

The Vae Victis (‘Woe to the Conquered’) campaign covers the wars between the Romans and the Etruscans in central Italy in the late fourth century BC, unfolding over a series of seven Years.

Players represent these two major factions, playing co-operatively in teams within each major faction (2-3 players in each team). The idea with more than one player in each team is that we can relieve each other when real life calls and still ensure that the campaign progresses. Furthermore, players can, if desired, focus on what they enjoy the most: the strategic considerations on the map or on the actual in-game battles. (This could vary over time as agreed within teams, depending on real life commitments.)

Five non-major factions (Gauls, Samnites, Greeks, Umbrians, and Sabines) are also potentially available, as part of successful diplomacy, in the form of allies to the armies of the major factions in battles or even as outright armies of their own, then controlled by the major factions.

The main objective is to control the enemy faction's capital, the campaign ending immediately in victory for a major faction if the opposing major faction loses control of its capital.

Battles will be fought in Field of Glory II: Ancients, using a separate module (to allow for all allies) with applicable army lists from Paul59's marvellous TT Mod (permission granted by Paul already, many thanks!). (The module is already created and can, once the campaign launches, be downloaded in-game: very quick and easy.)
  • Etruscans (Etruscan 330-280 BC)
  • Romans (Roman 340-281 BC)
  • Gauls (Gallic Lowland Tribes 390-301 BC)
  • Samnites (Samnite 355-272 BC)
  • Greeks (Greek (Western) 380-281 BC)
  • Umbrians (Umbrian 490-260 BC)

If you think it sounds interesting to join as the third Roman player, please read the rules (see next post). If you're still interested after that and can commit to a slow-pace campaign that will 'drag on' for months or longer, please PM me. Welcome!

The Romans deployed their two Armies in Tarquinii and Clusium, the Etruscans in Arretium and Volaterrae.

The Romans selected Army Operation, and moved two hexes northwards from Clusium but their Army in Tarquinii failed in its first move attempt.

The Etruscans selected Army Operation as well, and their Army I moved south one hex from Arretium, entering the ZoC of Roman Army II. The Etruscan Army II managed to move along the road from Volaterrae to Populonia before failing to move further.

So question to the Romans is: does the Roman Army II attack the Etruscan Army I?

The Augurs report birds flying right, and the sheep entrails and liver clear.
Soldiers start falling into formation. Battle it is!

Great!

BATTLE NEAR ARRETIUM
Roman Army II (Roman with no allies, 1550 FP) versus Etruscan Army I (Etruscan with no allies, 1550 FP). Mediterranean Hilly.

(Rolled for Map Type… 2 => Terrain in Attacker’s hex => Hilly)

Who creates the challenge? Is it the attacker or the defender?

I’d say the DEFENDER and then with himself as SIDE B. This in order for the other player to be Side A and thus to immediately get it after having accepted the challenge so can deploy. Plus consistent with that ATTACKER should be SIDE A to be the one to move first.

Game set for the first battle of the campaign, password : firstblood !

May the Gods be with us !

PS : by default, I made a unranked game. We can see in the future if you want rank the games (I'm agree).

Game accepted. I'm ok either way, ranked or unranked.

See you in the battlefield!

I suggest that we keep all games in the campaign unranked. So outcome of games only have effects on the campaign and nothing else.

agreed the strategic decisions could outweigh tactical and individual battles

Victory for the Etruscans ! for the first battle.

Bitter victory, with 55% of losses for the Etruscans and 60% for the Romans. Both armies status are reduced by 1.

What a battle !
