Multiplayer problems with both Spartan and GoT.

I have had a continuing problem with running both Spartan and GoT. I have two copies of both games and am running on a LAN. I have played both games sucessfully several times but when I try to play its always a VERY difficult time getting the two computers to play the same game. Right now we are trying to play a campaign game but I one computer can see both of us and one computer and only see one player so we can't start. I have had this problem MANY times. We have had to re-intall, and tried 3d or 2d and worked for hours to try to get it linked up but can't. Can we get some help? Its worked before so its not a hardware issue. I can't get both computers to see one another in the lobby.

If it worked before and none of the hardware has changed, then could it be a windows update issue? IIRC (and it was a long time ago I wrote the code...) they use broadcast UDP to deal with the lobbying. Could it be a windows firewall issue? Are the appropriate ports (as I think listed in the readme) opened on both machines? Sorry I can't be more specific, out of the office today. Give this thread a bump if you are still having issues.
Cheers

The windows firewall is disabled on both computers. How would I check the status of the ports?

You would need to log into your router - although thinking about it, it should only be an issue over the internet, rather than on a LAN, unless you have multiple routers (or perhaps are playing wirelessly?).
It could be that there is some block on broadcast traffic on the router - google might be your friend in this instance to check for the specifics of your make and model of router.

We are playing on direct LAN connection not wireless

Any other ideas? We are at a standstill. We have one router. But it looks like you said thats not the issue if were playing without internet or wireless. I don't see that there is a internet play option with these two games? Is there supposed to be? Is pathc 1.017 the latest patch for Spartan and GOT?

There is an internet option, but I don't think it will work for two machines behind the same NAT, although it might as (if I remember correctly) do NAT negotiation through Gamespy. It's perhaps worth a try. I can't think of anything beyond your router being configured to block broadcast UDP packets (which will be something specific to the model and make).

What is NAT?

Network Address Translation - it's how you can have multiple computers connected to the internet through a single IP connection.

We were able to get the Spartan to link via gamespy over the internet. We can't find Gates of Troy on their list. Does it have the gamespy capability? Thanks for your help.

I can't remember exactly whether GoT got listed as a seperate product. As it is integrated with Spartan it will probably just work as Spartan does. If not, then we must have decided not to use it for GoT (perhaps for licensing reasons).
I'd still suggest it is worth looking into why your router isn't allowing LAN play - google may well be your friend.
