Enemy recon not adjacent

My infantry unit in the centre is attacking the enemy Cavalry unit down the white arrow, but an enemy recon car is helping the cavalry, even though the recon and cav are not adjacent to each other.
Yet I think i once read in the manual that a recon must be adjacent to his chum under attack in order to help him,or did I imagine it?

The recon aids the attacker when next to the attacked unit, not next to the attacking unit.
In this case while you are the attacker, for the return fire you are the attacked, so yes recon helps.
There is a hero [AimingAssit?] that works when next to the attacker, can be behind attacker.

Thanks, the "return fire" thing explains it..
For example in the situation below, my unit is attacking the AI unit down the white arrow, but there are no less than 3 AI recons on my back assisting their mates return fire-
