Returning to FOG and this has prompted some ancient military reading. I have found the Osprey books on Leuctra and Granicus to be interesting/good value. It's widely reported that the quality range of Ospreys is quite wide so interested in hearing if others here have any Osprey favorites/recommendations? I'm particularly interested in tactics but also in well researched background to battles. Covering any period prior to about 500AD.Thanks.

An interesting talk on Granicus.

I think the Osprey books are written by different people, hence the variability in quality.

Many thanks for your replies - Goldsworthy is engaging and unapologetically takes his time which I applaud! My word, Anna appears to have a very large archive indeed! I prefer physical books but this would make an ideal try before buying resource, thank you. I will check out the Pylos & Sphacteria vol. and perhaps those on Salamis and Plataea by the same author and illustrator are also good...
