Editing Unit Icon/Art + Texture

I'm posting this question to get some help since this question has never been posted on this forum.
I'm in the middle of editing and creating new unit icons. Editing the main side icon is straightforward (export as .dds), but I'm lost on what to do with the four unit icons ("_SLOT").
I could simply edit the slots themselves and be done with it, though it certainly makes them an eyesore, especially the transparent one. Is there a template I could use somewhere in the texture file? How would I proceed to make an icon_slot file from scratch if I need to?
And what program should I be using to edit unit texture in SJIDAI?
