I am playing as England. I conquered Wales and annexed East England.
My court expenses are 674. Why so high and how to decrease them?

Same, MP games can only continue with the latest version in any case.

Court expenses with the latest patch may have gone too far the other way. In our ongoing MP game as Byzantium, I have gone from Court expenses of -2500 to -500 in a few turns and now have a surplus of +2800 per turn.

I can only agree!

The fix to court expenses was a big reduction to it based on civilization tier. Compared to before, tier 1 & 3 governments got a 40% reduction, 45% for tier 2. Kind of extreme if you ask me.

Am I the only one who did not really have major court expense issues in the previous patch?
My play style is to place my all my Freemen in Infrastructure as the default. So, when my CE went pear shaped, like everyone else's did, all I needed to do was shift nearly all to Commerce. I had basically set my economy and military to the levels where I had this kind of buffer available.

Well I spent 90 gold on military had (practically) all nobles and freemen on money after the previous patch and still running -900 gold.

same here, Georgia, Ascending Monarchy , 83 provinces before that was like - 300g or so per turn, now with a lot more armies I go + 100 easily. The game has become a bit less challenging i'd say

The issue is that for the general public, CE are still a big burden. MP players tend to be more competitive and more in optimizing things.

MP and Single are 2 different games, with widely different strategies.

I think that the previous high level of court expenses was not good for the game, as many new players got frustrated with them. So did I, though I was able to deal with the issue, It took a lot of energy and distracted me from the more fun parts of the game.
I had introduced a couple of gamers to the game, got them to buy it, and both of them stopped playing when they got frustrated with court expenses. Now they are back to playing and enjoying the game now that the current patch has reduced them. They still find them a challenge, but one that is not too hard to deal with. I might even be able to convince them to post a good review.

There must be some middle ground, now my and the Byzant in another MP game can't buy so many mercs as to go negative gold without having very high civil war chance.
