having played a few games now, still not sure how to calculate shooting dice for various 2nd rank bases. Anyone able to clarify who can shoot from 2nd rank and how many dice?
Cheers
Ben

The shooting chapter tells you that all troops can shoot from a second rank, except chariots and artillery (and, in effect, battlwagons). Terrain sometimes prevents all troops from shooting from a 2nd rank (see the terrain effects table).

Page 90 tell you how many dice (or how many bases you need per dice). The table can be interpreted as follows:

If the front rank do not have shooting weapons, then the 2nd rank shoot with the same dice they would have if they were the front rank (they are the "1st shooting rank").

In most other cases the bases per dice is the same for 2nd rank and front rank bases (so the table does not explicitly mention 1st or 2nd ranks). In these cases just add up all the front and 2nd rank bases and divide by 2 or 3. (2 for light foot etc in effective range, or MF outside effective range; 3 for LF etc outside effective range).

In two cases (cavalry or MF at effective range) where front and 2nd rank are both shooting the second rank only gets 1 dice per 2 bases (the front rank gets 1 dice per base).

For shooting in impact combat, the table on p92 tells you it is always 1 dice per base (but LF lose 1 dice per 2 dice).

Lawrence's answer is correct.

This does however remind me of a question that came up in Leeds. If a BG of MF with front rank light spear and rear rank bow is in a forrest can the bow shoot? The rules say that you can only shoot in 1 rank in some terrain, the owners of the MF were arguing that only 1 rank was indeed shooting.

Wasn't this discussed incidentally in a recent thread on what happens if one rank is in terrain and the other out of it?
