Looking for recommendations for 15mm Early Byzantine ranges and cross compatibility of. I really like the Khurasan figures and have seen some nice Museum Miniatures ones as well but I'm not sure what else is available and what fits in with what?

Any guidance appreciated.

Cheers

I did a lot of research on this a year or so ago:

Both Kurasan and Outpost are good but are tailored to the periods (most obviously identified due to their teardrop shields.

I wanted Byzantines for early, thematic and at a stretch early nikephorian so needed the roundies.

I went with a mix of essex and 50 paces. They mix well and are of comparable size. Allain Touller are worth a look however they may be too late as well - you'd have to view the site.

Khurasan now has Early Byzantines in their Late Roman/Early Byzantine range.

Although I like Essex's Later Byzantines I really don't care for their Early Byzantines (what there is of them).

Old Glory also has Early Byzantines, including armored horse archers.

From what I have seen on their website if I were building an Early Byzantine army I would go with Khurasan, although I would order some samples first.

I am tempted by Khurasan. May go the sample route first as it's going to end of year before I launch in to this one.

Hadn't thought of Old Glory - might try and google some pics.

Essex nearest would be from the Maurikian range? May need a not more research to pick correct ones.

Oh, well. It's am excuse to buy more figures... :)

I recently bought some Khurasan and Museum Turks. They are nice figures but the size difference is huge. The Museum figure is on the left here.

This might help. It has links to maybe 10 manufacturers with the right era of figures for you.

Thanks guys. That's a big help. I quite like the look of some of the Old Glory but would want to see how they match to say Essex and Khurasan

So the Museum horse is way too big; doesn't have a knotted tail; and has the wrong horse furniture...
difficult call :-)

Well the Museum figure is listed as a "Sogdian" and the Khurasan figure as a "Turkoman"; would that make a difference to horse furniture? Size wise, they don't mix, which was part of the point of the original question (in the context of Byzantines). I've not been able to compare directly, but I've found Essex mounted figures also rather large (so probably mix with Museum). Magister Militum (former Chariot) are small so probably mix with Khurasan, but I don't know if they do Byzantines.

Museum do figures described as "Turkoman", which are of similar size to (marginally larger than) the Khurasan figure, but totally different in appearance. http://www.museumminiatures.co.uk/images/ac06.jpg

So I guess one has to check the actual size of individual ranges, if not figures.

Very true Larry,

Museum do seem to be a bit larger. The Sogdian does seem to be on a generic European style horse, but should be on an Asiatic steppe horse (a very common problem with figures from many manufacturers). AC06 is even stranger, the horse looks like its from an Ancient range? The shield on arm is totally wrong (shields were rare and if carried were slung over the riders back or at the horses rump when the bow was used). The furry helmet would be 'unusual' for turkomen in the Crusades.

I guess I'll a bit OTT re proper horses, it just annoys me. After all these steppe horses were used in huge numbers by lots of armies.

OG fits very well with Essex and Khurasan. Moreso than other castings out there (Xyston, CB). For me, until I say that Khurasan released their range, I would have recommended OG. the Byz are one of their better lines.

FWIW, Museum tend to list the same figure as being different things in several different ranges. If you browse through their catalogue you will come across the same guys quite a number of times !

I agree with the Mad Axe Man guy
I think they Old Glory and Essex can mix well to give you a nice variety of horse guys especially
Then it depends on whether you want ALL of the figs on one stand to be exactly the same or you want some Variety on the stand or in the unit
I especially like the Essex Command figs
BUT most of my guys are Old Glory
I know they have a sale on right now
