This is probably a total shot in the dark but i'm gonna try and ask. Legion Gold works almost perfectly on the Steam Deck, even the default Steam Deck controls work fine. The issue however is that as soon as you attack an army or city the game will instantly crash. This same issue sadly plagues Chariots of War. Obviously i'm aware that when emulating Windows games on the deck with Proton it's not guaranteed to run perfectly or at all but If anyone could help or point to why it's crashing i'd love to know. Gates of Troy/Spartan run just fine on the Deck and are great portable strategy games but Legion which is my favourite of the classic Slitherine games is sadly unplayable.

I'll try and take a look once I get a Steam Deck here on hand.

Thanks a lot pip, i did a bit of digging last night myself and came across Valves github for Proton. An issue report for Legion Gold was posted with the same issue i decribed back in 2022. Provided link below, might be of interest.

If it helps I do own a Steam Deck and would be willing to assist.

I too have a strong interest in being able to play a childhood favourite on the go and have exactly the same issues as described above.

Another suggestion: If the issue is with Proton and not the actual hardware combo in the Steam Deck, perhaps if Pip is able to spin up a machine running Valves SteamOS they may be able to recreate the issue?

Update on this. I actually managed to get it running, sort of.

If I use the current "Proton Experimental" option in the Steam Compatibility mode for the game, the battles do not crash.

However, not all of the assets load and there are some issues. To be more specific the battleground is blue and the main UI frame is fixed over a portion of the battlefield underneath the military units.

I have linked the pictures from my Steam screenshots below, but progress I suppose. I imagine there is just some Windows dependency which has been added to the experimental build of Proton which was the cause of the crashes, and now it might just need a small patch to fix (I hope, although I have no idea what I am talking about when it comes to game development).

Legion is OLD - it used DX7 IIRC, and does an amount of rendering into a surface. I now have a Steam Deck here, and will try and get the game running in the debugger asap, though I am out of the office all next week.

Damn nice find Crispy, i totally forgot about trying the Proton Experimental build. Just tested it mysef and yup sadly the graphics are all bugged as you described but at least it's a step in the right direction and the battles are finally playable (kinda).

I had attempted it before with no success, but seen as Proton 9 was released, I figured Proton Expiremental was worth a shot. But of course without being able to see the battleground, it's hard to play the game properly...

But as you say, a step in the right direction. Hopefully Pip can get this on the debugger soon and perhaps a patch is possible!

Did you ever get around to debugging this?

I have not had a chance as yet. We've just launched FoG:Kingdoms which has been taking most of my time over the last months.

It's definitely on my todo list!

Oh, I have same issue, game runs fine, but when I enter battle - crash..
But for me, it's not steam deck, tried to run this game on mobile phone with Winlator emulator and Mobox, in both cases crash entering battle..
