We will be starting the next Slitherine official tournament after the release of the next game update.

This will be in a few weeks time because we need to complete beta testing a few things first.

In the meantime, we are open to suggestions for a theme for the next Ancients tournament, and suggestions for 5 interesting matchups within the theme.

Please post your suggestions in this thread.

In terms of Theme, I would love to see a Greek focused theme

A tournament focused on the new armies would be nice. Early matches against the Romans, later against the Arabs

Agreed, with whatever opponents can be found for them.

Medieval maybe some early Northern Europe ones, there are Scandanavian armies that are seldom used. Perhaps Danish/Swedish/Norwegian versus assorted opponents.

I'm thinking ELEPHANTS as the theme, with five matchups based on history in which at least one of the army lists in each matchup is elephant "heavy". Ideally with a tournament rule of maxing out on Elephants in all battles.

Some battles that come to mind are Hydaspes River (326 BC), Ipsus (301 BC), Raphia (217 BC), Zama (202 BC).

That will be a great one for the future. However, see below

I agree that we should showcase the new African armies this time round:

Proposed matchups:

1) 50 BC: Meroitic 280 BC- 400 AD vs Ptolemaic 55-30 BC (We don't know this happened, but it could have)
2) 23 BC: Meroitic 280 BC- 400 AD vs Roman 24BC - 196 AD (Roman punitive invasion of Meroe in response to Meroese raids)
3) 300 AD: Axumite 100-970 AD vs Arab (City) 300-633 AD (Axumite conquests in Arabia)
4) 500 AD: Blemmye 500-550 AD vs Byzantine 493-550 AD (Blemmye raids on Byzantine Egypt)
5) 621 AD: Christian Nubian 550-1049 AD vs Sassanid Persian 591-628 AD (During the Sassanid occupation of Egypt)

An alternative would be that the last match was against the Arab (Conquest) 638-684 list, to represent the failed Arab expedition to Makuria in the 640's and 650's

I deliberately avoided that because I think the Superior Arab Spearmen in that army list would make the game (on equal points) a bit one-sided.
