Oxford FOGR Sundays 2024 Round 2

Round 2 takes place on 9th June.
The theme is the Fifth Ottoman Venetian War, 1570 to March 1573, which was fought between the Ottoman Empire and Venice, Spain, Italian States. It seems that the viable lists are as follows:-
Ottoman Empire = Early Ottoman Turks from Clash of Empires
Venice = Early Venetian Colonial from Clash of Empires
Spain = Early Imperial Spanish from Trade and Treachery
Italian States = from Trade & Treachery (list finishes at 1555)
The last one is not ideal but OK I guess. Any comments or suggestions?
It would be great if several of the entrants were Ottoman - any volunteers?
Tom

				Hi Tom
I might be tempted to go Ottoman as I do have an Ottoman arm; but have not yet looked at the other options.

Oh and as per the other thread on the 700 points option, I see that is only for the 25mm games, so will look at the usual 650 + cheapest base options for my choices.

Personally I think the Ottoman list is too limited and doesn’t encourage people to pick them. You have to take artillery, medium infantry and average bow armed cav.
The best troops are superior cavalry, but you can’t buy many and on a 5 x 3 table there is little chance to manoeuvre.
You end up with 10-12 battle groups of not very hard hitting troops also the number of infantry required to get 2 battle groups of artillery means you have even less good cavalry.
Would probably go Spanish myself.
Just my thoughts.

Did look at the Ottomans and think Paddy's right.
Looks like it's going to be a lot of Spanish fighting each other in this round!

Bob has raised an important question about armies for June 9. Which version of the Spanish list is allowed. We agreed clearly not Flanders but were not sure if the choice should thereafter be confined to armies in Italy? My view is to keep it as open as possible given that we are already using a very restricted set of armies. Any other views?

				I looked at the Spanish lists and assumed all the optional's listed in Special  Campaigns were excluded (as this covers Flanders);
I assumed that any Optional troop options that were available in Italy would be allowed (e.g. Tercios viejos, Italian men-at-arms & Stradiots, but not Mercenary reiters / herreruelos)
On the Main List minima I suppose the only question that would arise is if "Walloon and Flemish infantry (before 1602), or mercenary Landsknechts" would apply as the campaign scoping is outside Flanders. I had assumed not.

				David,
the min you mention in your last para seems to apply to Italy too. Did the Spanish troops in the war agaisnt the Ottoman Empire actually come from their Italian forces? Failing evidence to the contrary we might think so but I reckon also to allow the list as it would be if neither Italy nor Flanders. Does that seem OK to you

I'll go with whatever the "hive mind" decide, but I would have thought anything on the list that is non theatre specific, plus anything in Italy (i.e. not Flanders) within the timeframe would make the most sense for this campaign/period.
