Terrain Display Bug in Beta versions

In both the Ancients and Medieval betas, odd visual bugs happen when moving units through terrain such as BUAs (which turn green or gray), forests (which some trees change colors) roads (which show weeds) etc. etc. This is only in the beta versions. kronenblatt reports the same.

THIS problem in Medieval too:

No textures to BUA when unit is in BUA tile:

Looks ok when no unit is in BUA tile:

Strange. I have tested this on my machine in Ancients and Medieval, both beta and release versions, and am not seeing this issue in any of them.

There was originally supposed to be engine code that made terrain objects like forests and villages fade (become semi-transparent) when a unit is on the square. This worked correctly in Pike and Shot (STUB engine), but has never (seemingly) worked at all in FOG2 (ARCHON engine).

Perhaps this bug is the result of this code partially working on some video cards, but not others.

Can you clarify whether this is only happening in the current betas, and not in the release version of either game?

I will then ask Pip if he has made any recent changes to the current .EXE that might cause this.

My video card is NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060

What is yours?

If anyone else has tested this issue, did you see the same problem? Either way, what is your video card?

I have checked the issue in the Steam beta, and I am not seeing the issue.

My graphics card is a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M (on laptop).

Can confirm the following:
  • Ancients: looks fine in release version as well as open beta.
  • Medieval: looks fine in release version but bugged in open beta.

And you are seeing this in both (Ancient and Medieval) betas, but neither release version?

Nor in the release version?

No, problem is only in Medieval. See above.

This happens to me in both ancients and medieval beta, but not release versions. It does not happen in either the force comp or deployment phase, only once the game has started. I have a GeForce RTX 2070 Super.

When I move unit into town in Medieval Beta patch I get this.

Seems like the UV map gets completely messed up. There are roof tile texturing on the walls and wall texturing on the roofs, the windows etc details are completely out of scale. There's no transparency effect of any kind.

In non-beta Medieval the buildings don't change at all when the unit enters them. No transparency or texture changes. I don't ever remember seeing transparency or bugged textures when unit is occupying buildings.

I found one screenshot of mine of FoG2 Ancients from 2018 where building is not transparent or bugged when a light foot is in its tile. (The relevant bit being that the screenshot has been taken on this same PC)

GPU Nvidia GTX 1070, Nvidia drivers version: 536.23

Steam release version is fine, as is the Slitherine release version.

I will try to get the Slitherine Beta and test that.

The Slitherine Beta version doesn't have the issue for me either. So I am not seeing the issue in any version of Medieval.

The bug (introduced in the recent .EXE update) has been found and hopefully fixed.

Since I cannot see the bug myself, I will have to release a beta update so you guys can see if it is fixed for you.

Great! Fixed in both games yes?

Supposedly, but I cannot test it myself as I have not been able to reproduce the bug. However Pip, has identified the cause and hopefully fixed it.

I have sent the new builds off to the production department to work on as soon as time permits.

The FOG2 Ancients v1.6.14 open beta, and FOG2 Medieval v1.5.17 open beta builds are now available. Please could people test whether there is still an issue with village and forest objects not showing their textures correctly when there is a unit in the same square.

Checked FOG2 Medieval and its v1.5.17 open beta build and it looks ok for me now!
