Slitherine

I'm trying to get into Order of battle...bought the game a few years ago but never played it. One of the things I don't like is the game doesn't seem to give you clear information on what die rolls are being made. In panzer corps you can press the L key and get full details of the combat. Can someone explain in clear terms what is actually going on with what rolls are being made?
